Massage therapy history has more than 2400 years. Healing benefits of human touch were first noted by a Greek physician by the name Hippocrates. Nowadays massage therapy is used for numerous purposes such as tending to painful ailments, relaxing tired muscles, reducing stress and depression, rehabilitating sports injuries, and just for general health. Massage therapists use different massage techniques for these tasks by working on client’s soft tissues so that they can improve the blood circulation and take off bad products from the muscles.

There are over 1700 massage therapy training post secondary schools, college programs, and other training programs in USA. Massage therapy training cover a vast variety of courses which mostly range from subjects such as anatomy, the study of organs and tissues, physiology, kinesiology the study of motion and body mechanics, ethics and students also usually get the opportunity to have hands-on practice on volunteers or other students and try out their massage techniques - this’s an all-important part of massage therapy training.

The majority of programs require an application and sometimes you need to go in for an interview. Some programs give the students great opportunities by offering them services like post-graduate job placement and continuing educational programs. You also have the chance to choose between either going through a full time or part-time massage therapy training.

Once students have completed their massage therapy training program, new massage therapists may take the national certification examination for therapeutic massage and bodywork. Exam is administered by the NCBTMB which has its own personal eligibility requirements.

This exam covers six different subjects for general knowledge of the body systems. It also covers detailed knowledge of anatomy, pathology, therapeutic massage assessment, therapeutic massage application, physiology and kinesiology, professional standards, ethics and some different massage techniques. Massage therapy is one of the fastest-growing industires on health and wellbeing, so career opportunities are wonderful. Those, who have their own personal business tend to have the highest salaries.
